How to Enter

Eligibility

Open to riders, coaches, and judges actively participating in equestrian drill team during the current year. No age or gender requirements.  Applicants must be enrolled or enrolling in college, university, continuing education, trade school, or vocational school in Fall of 2022 and/or Spring 2023.  To award the scholarship, there must be a minimum of (5) entries in the award contest.

The entry deadline for the Lynsey Berger/Kristen Stevens Memorial Essay Scholarship Award is as follows:  2023 Northeast Texas Equine Events: July 31, 2022 

Award

$500 will be awarded to the winning essay. Upon proof of enrollment to any post-secondary educational schools, a written request from the award winner must be made for payment.

Essay Topic

Rules

To avoid disqualification, essays must include a cover sheet that includes:  

  1. Name and Address  
  2. Email address  
  3. Your connection to equestrian drill as rider, coach, or judge.  
  4. Team name and location.   


  • DO NOT put your name on any of the pages of the essay, only on the cover sheet; your essay will be disqualified if your name is on any other page  
  • The essay must be no fewer than 200 and no more than 1,000 words in length, and double-spaced.  
  • The essay must be submitted as a MICROSOFT WORD file and must be received by the following deadline: July 31, 2022, no later than 11:59 PM Central Time  
  • Your MICROSOFT WORD file must be saved/named in the following way: LASTNAME_2023scholarshipESSAY 
  • The essay must be the work of the entrant. Plagiarism will result in disqualification from ALL future Scholarship contests.
  • Decisions of the judges are final. 
  • All entries become the property of the Northeast Texas Equine Events will not be returned.  
  • The winner will be notified at the end of the Northeast Texas Drillfest event.  
  • The contest winner agrees to allow the Northeast Texas Equine Events to post his or her name on any of the affiliated websites.  
  • The winner will be solely responsible for any federal, state, or local taxes.  
  • Scholarships must be claimed within 1 Year of completion of scholarship contest. 

Judging

Essay submissions will be judged on style, grammar, spelling, and creativity. The judging committee is comprised of drill riders, coaches, clinicians and well-respected judges from across the United States. Essays are evaluated in a blind judging process. Winners’ names are unknown to the judges until after the contest results are finalized.

Right to Cancel or Suspend Contest

If for any reason the Contest is not capable of running as planned, due to infection by computer virus, bugs, worms, trojan horses, denial of service attacks, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes beyond the control of the association that corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this Contest, the officials reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual(s) who tamper with the entry process, and/or to cancel, terminate, modify, or suspend the Contest. If the Administration elects to cancel or terminate the Contest, the Northeast Texas Equine Events will not retain any rights in the submitted essays.
